It seems, at times, that folks are always looking for the ultimate high. One of the simplest (and certainly most legal) ways to do this is mix alcohol and cannabis.
This intentional overlap in order to achieve that effect is known as crossfading.
Simple as it is to cross these two substances, doing it in a balanced way is a lot more difficult. And the sought-after high can easily become more of a nightmare. It all comes down to the different effects these two substances have on the body.
Cannabis’s Effect on the Body
Cannabis, and THC more specifically, connects with the cannabinoid receptors in the brain. When used mindfully and judiciously, THC can deliver some very desirable cognitive effects such as a mellow feeling, relaxation, and lowered inhibitions.
But too much THC can be problematic. While not fatal, it can result in a laundry list of less desirable effects including dizziness, impaired judgment, headaches, drowsiness, fatigue, nausea, and increased heart rate.
When cannabis is combined with other substances in a nonchalant manner, these symptoms can become exacerbated. It may also create high levels of anxiety, panic attacks, and paranoia.
Alcohol’s Effect on the Body
While cannabis links in with receptors in the brain, alcohol targets the whole central nervous system. Similar to cannabis, it can deliver a calming effect with lowered inhibitions and a sense of happiness.
It’s very easy to drink too much. And when heavy or binge drinking is a regular habit, it can result in some very serious medical issues including weakened immune system, high blood pressure, stroke, pancreatitis, heart disease, cirrhosis of the liver, and heart attack. And that’s just the shortlist.
Mix in cannabis and the effects of inebriation are increased. Motor function is impacted and cognitive impairment is heightened. Chances of blacking out or alcohol blood poisoning are also higher because cannabis has an antiemetic effect that inhibits the ability to vomit – the body’s means for extracting too much ethanol.
Doesn’t sound like much fun, does it?
So Why Has Crossfading Become So Popular?
Crossfading is definitely a “thing.” The internet is now full of articles and forums that discuss the use of alcohol in bongs. And why not, they think. They’ve tried Gatorade, LaCroix, mouthwash, hot sauce, and even ranch dressing. (Don’t ask.)
The problem with alcohol though is that inhaling alcohol vapor can be dangerous. Especially because the effects are nearly impossible to measure. And that’s the key in successful crossfading.
For crossfading enthusiasts, the trick is in getting the dosages just right. And to do so is to walk a very fine line. But when they manage to strike that perfect balance, it can be downright amazing. Or so they say. Even when that balance is tenuous, at best.
Much like mixing different kinds of alcohol, there’s an old saying that goes, “Weed then beer, you’re in the clear. Beer then grass, you’re on your ass!”
Even so, cannabis is much stronger now than it was when that brilliant thought was formulated. So it’s probably best to stick to one or the other.
